The Co-op Underground

Co-ops, Building Community Daily!

Hi all, I'm thinking good thoughts and sending strong, healing energy to Pop.
Dad, maybe you should try Airborne.

Taking Airborne (or Walborn, if it's from Wal-Mart) works wonders! I've been able to avoid the icky nasty flu, as my co-workers get it one after another...

It even helps you heal if you’re already sick. I haven't gotten either of the flu shots yet, although I had better get on that. I LOVE getting shots. I should have been a heroin addict.

I went to an absolutely incredible ALS support group last night in Sackoftomatos. Wow! It was very spiritual and moving. I met some fantastic new people, some with ALS, some caregivers. They also have monthly Saturday meetings, which are larger.

Also, the Sac chapter of ALS has arranged for quarterly visits from the San Francisco ForbesNorris ALS clinic. This means all of the specialists (therapists) from SF will come TO Sac, so we don't have to drive to SF for the clinical treatments. Those include physical therapy, occupational therapy, pulmonary therapy, speech therapy, social work...and perhaps typing and typo therapy.

Regarding T-day, Linda and I can bring garlic mash potatoes and salad stuff and maybe some Satsuma mandarins for thanksgiving.

Psssssst, hint hint, if anyone wants to know what I'd like for my 50th birthday, ask Linda. I hope she'll say, "Passes to the Davis Athletic club." That is where I do my warm water therapy. It doesn't make sense for me actually join the club, and pay membership fee and go thru orientation, etc, etc. the only thing I use is the warm water therapy. It is perfect for me. Therefore, I just need to buy monthly passes.

I do my physical therapy on my own, since I pretty much know what to do after watching Mom, Larry, and from going to my own PT appts.

The Co-op was headlining on the TV news the last couple nights because a freight train derailed right behind the store, spilling some white-ish substance, and nearly knocking down power and phone lines and poles. In addition, the boxcars were in danger of knocking down the fences and falling into several backyards of houses on the other side of the tracks.

Oddly enough, just last Wed I gave a very detailed safety training to all managers and asst managers about how to handle emergencies that might include evacuation, etc.

One of the items I spoke about sternly was the possibility of a train wreck behind our building. Someone in the meeting scoffed, "well, how likely is THAT to happen?" I replied forcefully:

"Well, you never know...."

Any way no one was hurt, and the spilled substance was harmless. But we had such a large number of train derailment looky-loos, I told the General Manger that we should go out and sell drinks and healthy snacks. Our staff gave out some free samples of our homemade baked goods.

I got interviewed by a few reporters, of course, because I'm the SAFETY DIRECTOR!

One reporter, from Placer County of all places, asked me if the accident had affected our business. And I said, "Never mind that stuff. I HAVE ALS!"

Just kidding I'm not THAT self -obsessed! I just told him that I hoped all of the onlookers would get thirsty from watching all the action and come into the Co-op to buy fresh carrot juice. He thought that was funny.

And of course, oddly enough, I personally know the fire chief (a woman named Rose) and captain. The captain, Mike, is a super nice guy who I trained with for about one year a few years ago. I was a certified member of CERT. Community Emergency Reponses Team, with an official I.D., helmet. vest, shirt, whistle, goggles and everything.
Anywhoooooo, I had to drop out of that due to my physical limitations.

After the fire crew got things settled down---there was no fire--Mike spent the whole time talking to me and asking about my health. I know several others of the firefighters, and they are all great guys. So we were all waving" bye -bye" to each other is they drove away on the fire truck. It was a sweet moment. One can find love anywhere---even at a train wreck!

Dad, please feel better, 'cause we're getting to rock 'n roll (with walkers that roll) for thanksgiving.

Erin -we WILL be at your game this weekend. Peg- what time should we get to SF on Saturday?

Love,
Cathy
