2012 has been recognised as the International Year of Co-operatives by the United Nations. 2012 has been recognised as the International Year of Co-operatives by the United Nations. This is an acknowledgement by the international community that co-operatives drive the economy, respond to social change, are resilient to the global economic crisis and are serious, successful businesses creating jobs in all sectors.

The Cooperative movement's first sound motion picture, "Here is Tomorrow," was completed during the year and released for distribution January 1, 1942. The picture was produced by Documentary Film Productions, Inc., for The Cooperative League. The camera crew traveled 6,000 miles shooting cooperatives in action as the basis for the movie.
