Sky-diving for ALS

SkyDance SkyDiving is hosting an ALS awareness event Sunday, April 11 at noon at the Yolo County Airport. Davisite Cathy Speck, who has familial ALS, is inviting everyone to join her jumping or celebrating the jump to help raise awareness about ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) aka Lou Gehrig's disease. Speck is an advocate for the greater Sacramento area chapter of ALS (ALSSAC) and will be joined by ALSSAC staff as they celebrate life and continue educating the public about ALS. ALS is a progressive, terminal, neuromuscular disease and is among the most devastating disorders of our time. More people die every year of ALS than of Huntington's disease or multiple sclerosis and it occurs two-thirds as frequently as multiple sclerosis. Approximately 5,600 people in the U.S. are disgnosed with ALS each year. There is currently no cure or known cause for ALS. ALS awareness events such as this hope to help raise funds for financing further research.
This will be the first time Speck will be skydiving, and she was offered this opportunity to jump by Maggie Williams, who had read an article that Speck had written about ALS. Williams, a seasoned skydiver, has over 1,000 skydives, and was the first female civilian in the U.S. to have made an extreme altitude jump from 30,000 feet.
SkyDance SkyDiving, located at 24390 Aviation Avenue, Davis, is a member of the US Parachute Association (USPA) that sets the guidelines and safety standards for skydiving, and all of the instructors are rated and certified by the USPA. In addition, SkyDance SkyDiving introduced tandem skydiving to the California in 1984, and they continue to operate the largest and most professional program in the country.
Anyone interested in trying the skydiving adventure should call SkyDance at 1-800-SKY-DIVE (or 530-753-2651) to make a reservation. To get a group discount, be sure to mention ALS and Cathy Speck. A $25 deposit is required, and there is a 225-pound weight limit. Everyone is invited to join the celebration on the grounds and picnic area as the skydivers land. You can bring your own picnic and beverages, and there is a concession stand to purchase hot dogs, beer, etc.
More information is available at www.skydanceskydiving.net or by calling Cathy Speck 530-756-8260. Questions about ALS can be asked atwww.alssac.org 916-979-9265.
